Our visit to the Kaikohe Pioneer Village.

During our visit to the Kaikohe Pioneer Visit on Friday 27th May, we learnt so much about what life was like 100 years ago.
Thank you to the staff of the Kaikohe Pioneer Village for providing such amazing
resources that allowed us to step back in time to experience and to get some understanding of what it was like living and going to school 100 years ago.
A special thank you to Whaea Shirley for bringing resources from the Whangarei Museum
and for running the old school for the day.

Learning how to make muka from flax with Whaea Makareta.

Making butter. It tasted just like butter you buy in the shop.
Very yummy on takakau and jam.

Riding in the train carriage.

Thank you Matua Trevor for taking us for a ride on
the Grout Cycle car.

On the Steam engine trailer.

Where's the fire?
Riding on the old fire engine.

Are your fingernails clean? Are your hands clean?
Hygiene check in the old school.

Writing with old time writing tools - the feather quill and dip ink pens.

Is this how our great, great grandmother's dressed
for school 100 years ago?

Old time writing.

  1. It was great being a part of this day with my group and the rest of the students, staff parents/caregivers and the Puna whanau who were happy to tag along with us. I'm so glad we got to ride the train, grout car, fire-engine and the steam traction, go into the buildings and experience all the activities. The re-enactment of a courthouse scenario acted out by my group was so hilarious. Well done everyone.
